Toby Smith has long been one of those producers with enormous potential. Since his first release on Odori in 2004, he's been carving out a niche for himself somewhere in between the dubbed-out house of the idjusts, the shiny dancefloor boogie of nick Chacona and the noughties Balearica of Mudd or Lexx. This debut album for Matt Edwards' on-form Rekids imprint is easily his best work yet, neatly showcasing his new-found maturity as a producer. Launching with the blissful Balearica of 'Shoon' Toby slowly moves through the gears, progressing to club-friendly disco-tech (previous singles 'Dave's Sex Bits' and 'a Close shave') via dubwise synth-boogie, starlight electronica and shimmering nu-disco floorslayers ("Breakdown"). There's also a couple of forays into vocal territory, most notably 'The Feeling', an almost anthemic chunk of midtempo disco featuring Kathy Diamond that just has "end of a night classic" written all over it. Even better is the atmospheric dub-house or "Every Move", which somehow manages to work a bizarre, folksy vocal into a spine-tingling Balearic work out full of sunrise synths and lazy sax. Like the album as a whole, it really is quite wonderful.
